Yesterday, 1st May, temperature here 27 degrees, this morning 11.4.
MV trap outside the back door. 47 species
Catch of the day for me was a pristine Great Prominent, which I haven't seen since I left Dorset 18 years ago.
3 Puss Moths were a welcome sight, which I haven't seen for the last two years.
Another Chocolate-tip was good to see, following last year's sighting.
Another first for the garden was a very active female Emperor, who had already laid eggs in the trap, which I transferred to a bramble in the hedge.
And finally, actual migrants! 3 Plutella xylostella

Beautifully composed and top-notch photos, Chris. Some comments on two of them: 1. I`m envious of your chocolate-tip, a species that I`ve not yet had but which is seemingly colonising SE Carms. 2. Regarding the great prominent, it will be a familiar species to those recording in North and mid Carms but not in the southern part of the county. When I moved to my current address and started off the 2019 season, I caught one (I`m next to mixed mature woodland) and thought that more would follow - but none have since. I note that it is regarded as a rarity in adjacent Glamorgan with just 4 old (1890-1956) records, though I don`t understand its absence as it is said to be a moth of oak woodland - a tree type that is common on the Glamorgan coalfield, as well as that coalfield`s western extension which includes my home at Llanelli and the Gwendraeth Fawr valley, where you trap.
ReplyDeleteThanks Ian. I also had another Chocolate-tip next time I trapped on 10th May.
