Northern Winter Moth or not????
I hope I have identified the Northern Winter Moth correctly. It was larger than Winter Moth, much lighter in colour and had the white/grey hind-wings as shown in Townsend and Waring. As always, all help gratefully received.
It looks good to me, Jane, but hopefully someone more qualified than me will see it and give a judgement. I recorded NWM in 2013, you might care to visit the blog archive for 3 December 2013, I posted a photo of the moth next to a Winter Moth for comparison. I'm not sure whether there have been any more recorded since then, can't recall seeing any reported on the blog.
It rather stuck out amongst the catch as something I hadn't knowingly seen before, but as it is listed as common in Townsend and Waring I didn't look it up on Sam's list. Which is why I rather sweepingly put a positive id on it! Had I looked I would have asked on here first. Note to self....always check the list....
Hello Mystery Contributor, and welcome! I imagine that you get some very interesting moths at the NBG, would it be possible to post your results on the blog from time to time?

ReplyDeleteWe had one at the National Botanic Garden last night (a Northern). We trap regularly, roughly once a fortnight.
