Over two sessions I have had 21 Elephant Hawkmoths, 2 Poplar Hawkmoths, Buff Arches, Spectacle, Buff Ermine, White Ermine, Small Angle Shades, Poplar Grey, Sharp-angled Peacock, Oblique Carpet, Uncertain, Middle-barred Minor, Green Carpet, Riband Wave, Peppered Moth, Gold Spot, Figure of Eighty, Common Swift, Brimstone, Beautiful Hook-tip, Barred Straw and so on...
I have a species list which I can send to anybody interested, as well as pictures of all the moths.

Good stuff Edward. Of those you have listed, Figure of Eighty is probably pick of the bunch - only 66 recorded in Carms up to 2016. See Carms Moth list and Status' 2016 to the right of your Beautiful Hook-tip photo above. If you made a photo of that one, perhaps you could add it to your post.
ReplyDeleteWelcome to the group, Edward, you've certainly made a cracking start at Penclacwydd, an impressive number of species already. Beautiful Hook-tip is pretty special, only 10 County records up to end of 2016 according to the list which Steve has drawn your attention to. I generally use the list to judge if a moth I've caught is at all special and, if so, I post a photo, I think that others probably do the same. Otherwise we might post one if it's a first sighting of the species for the year, or even if we just happen to get a particularly good image and want to show it off (not that often in my case!) Whatever, we will look forward to future contributions from your site.
ReplyDeleteI hadn't realised how uncommon Beautiful Hook-tip is in Carms; that's probably because I've never seen one! By the way, Chris is spot on - most of my posts are just intended to be pretty pictures.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the helpful replies. Will definitely be using that spreadsheet.
