Daytime mothing

I took a day off `the jobs` today and visited the Laugharne area with Nigel Stringer. The weather was reasonable, but the strong wind kept many daytime-flying moths under cover. Nevertheless, about a dozen species were caught at an extensive unimproved grassland site (only a very small portion of which was visited, partly due to my lack of wellies!). Ten or so species were later noted in the Sir John`s Hill area, just south of Laugharne. No noteworthy species were seen, just useful `bread-and-butter` records.

Above: just a small part of a site holding a large area of flower-rich grassland; once much of the countryside would have looked like this and its loss has led to a corresponding loss of wildlife, lepidoptera included.
