I'm not 100% sure that's Dotted Border rather than Scarce Umber. These two shouldn't be on the wing at the same time, so I'm not sure what the ID features are, but the outer edge of the median fascia looks to be at nearly 90 degrees in your moth, whereas the Dotted Border pics I have seen have that angle more tapering towards the wing tip. I'm probably wrong though.
ReplyDeleteSteve, I wouldn't wish to comment on which species you've got here, but it rang a few bells for me and you might be interested to check out a blog of mine on 4 December 2013 ('Which Umber') I had caught two moths, both very orange, and the concensus was that they were Scarce Umbers - and they were eventually recorded as such.

I am now satisfied that the moth is most likely to be Scarce Umber and on checking my records I find that, as well as Chris, I too logged and photographed one in 2013, on 21 November. You couldn't make it up! I've added the older photo above.
