Life, the Universe and Everything.
The solution to the conundrum posed by Douglas Adams in his Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy novels was, famously, 42. And that, somewhat surprisingly, was the number of moths attracted to the MV trap in the alder grove at Cwmllwyd last night. There were only four species; all common things - none of your fancy foreigners up here: singles of Feathered Thorn and Yellow-line Quaker, two Winter Moths and thirty-eight December Moths! I've not seen the like of that before - quite amazing, really. Had you set them out, head to tail, in a straight line, they would have reached from there to here. Wow!

ReplyDeleteI trapped as well last night and had 4 Dec moths & a Feathered Thorn worth it for those but I never get the numbers you do.
...and I was pleased to get 18 December moths (a record for me), but 38....!I`ll blog later.
ReplyDeleteOne advantage of trapping at Cwmllwyd is that we are within the Brecon Beacons International Dark Sky Reserve. It does get very dark here: there are only a couple of farmyard lights left on throughout the night within a radius of half a mile or so. It's at least a mile to the nearest street light. There's very little competition for a 125 watt mercury vapour lamp, so when there's a fresh flight of local moths, we often get to see good numbers of them.
