Tywi Forest

While water vole surveying up in the Tywi Forest yesterday I came across a caterpillar which I'd appreciate help with and also a slightly battered adult moth which I initially thought was an antler but I'm not 100% sure...

    Always ready to stick my neck out, Vaughn: I think your moth could be Haworth's Minor. If it is, it's a very fine catch indeed. Very well done! The overall pattern seems to be constant on this species, but the colouring, including the degree of white showing in the kidney mark and oval is quite variable (see link below, if you will). Which 10km square were you in?

    Is that Tywi Forest in Carms rather than Ceredigion or Brecknock? If so, it'll be only the 3rd Carms record, following two by Steve at Cwmllwyd. I've seen Haworth's Minor by day in Ceredigion before, but they are mighty uncommon.

    The larva is White Ermine. They seem commoner than usual this autumn.
