The results weren't great (see below), though Galium Carpet, Grey Mountain Carpet, Striped Twin-spot Carpet and Dark Brocade are all scarce upland species. There really should be better rewards up there, but it's quite a palaver.

I`ve actually trapped twice before up there - once in 1990, when there was nothing in the trap! I had n`t re-charged the battery sufficiently and it must have gone off pretty soon. The actinic was one that had a photo-sensitive cell ie it turned itself on....but the battery then failed. What a wasted journey up there and back - ie twice! That event would n`t be in any database as nothing was recorded.
ReplyDeleteThe next time I trapped there was on 1 Aug 1991, which should already be in the Carms database. I explored the cliffs that day and flushed grey mountain carpets from the ledges in the afternoon - it was quite a risky option swinging your net on steep cliff ledges that high up! One was caught and identified. The actinic was left overnight and it had several more (c.6) grey mountain carpets in it (and one specimen of a common species, which I can`t remember), when I called back there the next morning.
I remember our `jolly` in 2003....I put out an actinic too. A long night! - back home at c 3.30am!
PS....I`d like to say that I put my actinic higher than yours Sam, but I have to admit it was lower down!
ReplyDeleteGood effort, you should have been better rewarded. A July revisit surely would turn up some goodies.
