I was enjoying a drink with Julian in the sunshine outside the Towy Bridge Inn at Rhandirmwyn yesterday, when Hawk-eye Frieze spotted this Hummingbird Hawkmoth feeding on a Buddleia on the other side of the road.

You`ve had far too much to drink Colin!....it`s only a fat bluebottle! In any case that Julian Friese chap always gets things wrong!
ReplyDeleteSeriously, well spotted both....it shows, with the recent sightings of diamond-back moth and silver y, that there is a little migratory movement happening.
That's a very early Buddleia Colin. Sure it's not Lilac? Either way it's a great sighting, haven't seen one here for several years.
ReplyDeleteYes, it`s lilac - you can tell by the leaves. I`ve got two Buddleias in flower at the moment though - a B.salviifolia type and the hybrid B.lindleyana x crispa.

ReplyDelete...and I forgot, there`s also Buddleja colvilei, a big 15ft shrub in flower in the garden at the very moment!
ReplyDeleteYes, the leaves were a bit of a give-away, but at the end of the day it's the moth that matters! Actually I'm very fond of buddleia and have several here, yellow and various shades of purple/lilac, but none of them flower as early as this. I will look out for the varieties you mention, Ian, to get a longer flowering period.
