I trapped last night as walking home around 10.30pm it felt mild and still. Previous trapping tis year has been poor.  I emptied out 4am and there was a respectable 47 macro moths of 16 species. First Purple Thorn of the year, a very early V Pug (see photo).  Would appreciate confirmation if ID re the Geometridae in the other photo - is this a Mottled Grey? I had two - the other was very much like the image in the ID book I use.

  1. Mottled Grey looks right to me; let's hope a Recorder will confirm it. JB 2006 shows it as "Local," so it's a good'un.

  2. Looks like a mottled grey to me too Sally - nice record! Weather at nights seems to be too cold for productive trapping, though the Met Office currently says that Weds & Thurs nights will be cloudy...so roll on clouds! Keep an eye out for orange underwings in birchy areas during daytime sun.

  3. I agree it's Mottled Grey rather than Early Tooth-striped.

  4. Thanks Steve, Ian and Sam. I have had a few Mottled Grey over last fortnight and the first this year Early Tooth-striped in our porch last night.

I am checking our birches Ian but no sign yet of any orange underwings - but sun has been minimal here!
