Summer in Brechfa

Some late(ish) sightings from Cnwc-y-llwyn, Brechfa where my family spent much of the summer. Now that the porch light has been replaced with an LED one, nightly moth numbers are much lower than before so occasional trapping with the MV is my main way of recording moths there. I missed out on most of the best migration events because I was in Monmouthshire for them, but did get a few nice species.

17th July 2025: nearly 100 species including Yponomeuta sedella (new for Cnwc and the 7th Carms record) and Apotomis semifasciana

19th July 2025: my second Small Purple-barred for Cnwc, along with 3 Marsh Oblique-barred, 1 Small Rufous etc.

9th August 2025: a larval case of Coleophora paripennella on Knapweed in our field, new for Cnwc

24th August 2025: 2 Scrobipalpa ocellatella (new for Cnwc) and Palpita vitrealis (2nd record), showing that some migrants even reach Brechfa, along with a Lesser Wax Moth. I almost missed the vitrealis because it was resting on an egg-tray that also held 15 Hornets - when I flicked them off into the undergrowth, up flew a white moth that luckily landed on the barn wall.

25th August 2025: 2 Scarce Bordered Straw (new for Cnwc), 1 Neglected Rustic (new), 1 Beautiful Chinamark (new), 1 Lilac Beauty (2nd) and 1 Agriphila latistria.
