A few days ago I searched an area of the garden where two Emperor Moth larvae turned up last year, and found a number of similar larvae feeding on brambles. They were quite small (1 - 2 cm long), black with yellow markings. This afternoon I revisited the area and found several more, including the trio in the photo above which were over 2cm long and had a more developed pattern of yellow/orange markings.
It seems that the adult moth that hatched in my greenhouse this spring, but failed to attract a male, may have had siblings that bred successfully in the wild and produced at least one brood this year. Hopefully the trend will continue and give rise to a thriving local population.
