One migrant (and no CNPs) for me....

In almost complete contrast to the previous night I had no migrants (with the exception of a solitary rusty-dot pearl) in my garden traps. Incidentally, all the aforesaid migrants were released at about midday in my garden and none reappeared (nor did numbers of certain commoner species) - suggesting that re-trapping is not a major issue. The winds last night were coming off the Atlantic it seems, rather than skirting the north coast of Spain and Brittany, as was the case the previous night.

Above: the actinic in the foreground, with the bright light of the MV shining in the distant mid-garden area. Note the lavender on the `front-left` (to attract hummers) and Nicotiana to the right of the actinic (to attract the `big-boy` hawk-moths. None turned up this year!

Last night`s (6/9) moths comprised a mix of `locals`, augmented by one or two blown in from the nearby coast. Note `nearby` - it is not adjacent, as it was at my previous abode in west Pwll, and I miss a lot of the `coastals` that I used to regularly catch.

A coastal moth that did turn up last night was an Archer`s dart and it was accompanied by some classic urban/suburban moths - large ranunculus and cypress pug. The first of the autumn`s centre-barred sallows appeared and a garden pebble (strangely infrequent with me) was my first this year. I used to get it far more frequently in Pwll where its food-plants (various wild brassicas etc) were abundant. I also caught a wax moth last night (a large, dark female).

Footnote: I`m still dreaming of a large moth with blue wings and, don`t worry, if I catch one you will know soon enough. If I don`t, I`ll be grumpy all winter, so be warned!
