Pheromone lures

Belated New Year Greetings to all.

I am thinking of splashing out on some Pheromone lures, firstly for Emperor Moth, and also for Clearwings. Looking in the Atlas of Larger moths, it seems that Six-belted Clearwing is the one I’m in with a chance for, but would there be others that are worth trying for. Lunar Hornet Moth perhaps?

Any advice, pros and cons welcome.

  1. I would n`t bother with six-belted as you can find this sp by searching areas with plenty of bird`s-foot trefoil in season - it`s probably more coastal in Carms, but not exclusively so. Where you live, red-tipped (sallows etc), yellow-legged (oaks & sweet chestnuts), white-barred (riverside alders) , large red-belted (birches) or even Welsh clearwing (old birches) are more deserving of effort. Likewise re emperor moth -just walk the moors in season.

  2. Got all those habitats nearby, with exception of Sweet Chestnut.
Thank you Ian. I have read the Anglian Lepidopterists’ notes re not having the lure out for too long in any one habitat, also to be careful and not get any on clothes or hands!
