Anyone know what this one could be? Have checked in Jim Porter's Caterpillars of the British Isles and on web but cannot find.

It's a new one on me, Sally. How long is it and do you know what it's food plant is? You may have to breed it on to discover its identity.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like a scabious sawfly Abia sericea caterpillar - not a lepidopteran but still a good record. It feeds on devil`s-bit scabious and it was something that I occasionally found when going around species-rich meadows in the mid-late 1980s.

Unfortuately I released it - it was about an inche long and on plantain. We do have devils bit but not where it was found. However, it seems they are also found on teazel and it was near this species - I planted quite a few in a patch to feed the goldfinches. Looking up Abia seriea it certainly looks like this. Looking at the adults too I am sure I have seen them here before.
