Nettle Nester

This caterpillar was in a loosely woven nest on a nettle plant in the garden.  I suspect that it's a Painted Lady larva, but I'm not sure, never having seen one before - and it's supposed to prefer thistles.

Perhaps someone will recognise it.

  1. Vanessid larvae are tricky as they are so variable, but I think this is Red Admiral.

  2. Thank you George, I'm happy to stand corrected. On reflection Red Admiral does seem more likely, being a nettle-feeder.
