IIRC, Chris is the man who knows about Double Dart: I am not, for I have never seen one. I am, however, wondering if this odd moth found in the trap yesterday, could be a first for the site and for me. It looks somewhat battered in the photos, but that is a trick of the light - it was actually very shiny and this caused difficulty in capturing all the markings. It was good for size for DD. Any help would be much valued.
I`d go for a very worn triple-spotted clay or double square-spot myself, with slight odds on for the former. Look at the remains of a dark mark near the front part of the subterminal line (I had to look this term up!) on the forewing. I may be wrong Steve...
ReplyDeleteI'm with Ian here, Steve. I don't know how accurate the colour is in your photo, but DDs tend to be dull brown, almost pinkish. Also, they don't have transverse dark marks at one third, or shoulder marks - the black darts are a bit lower down. I'm posting a photo of a Maenol DD for comparison. Perhaps your moth is a little too worn to be sure of what it is.
ReplyDeleteMy gut feeling is Dotted Clay.
ReplyDeleteMany thanks for your comments, Guys. I think that the photos will go into the folder marked "Species unknown!"
