The pics were shot from about five feet away using a fixed focal length macro lens (no zoom). The originals had to be heavily cropped to provide the pics above: this accounts for the graininess of the images - one of the originals is shown below; the moth is more or less central in the photo.
Nice one, Steve, your Red Valerian (or whatever the plant is) must be a lot more attractive than mine. My numerous RV and Buddleia plants have been unsuccessful in attracting the moths. I can only hope that the Nicotianas will come up trumps with their larger cousins this autumn.
