The first orange underwing....

I had my first orange underwing of 2016 at a birch-rich site at Cencoed-uchaf (NW of Llanelli) this afternoon (31/3); only one was seen and it may be worth waiting for a couple more sunny days before searching your local patch. Bee-flies Bombylius major were out in the garden yesterday and today, together with various Andrena and Nomada aculeates. Spring has kicked in.
A welcome to our small Carmarthenshire moth recording group is extended to Adam Dare of Burry Port, who is intending to start moth recording this year. Adam also sent me this photo (see below) of a small tortoiseshell in his garden today:

Postscript: After entering the above, I`ve just looked at the Glamorgan moth group`s blog site and note that they too have had their first orange underwing - a nice bit of cross-border synchronised emergence by this species!
