Frittering around Pembrey (and Ffos Las)
I was walking around Pembrey country park last Thursday, 6th August and was delighted to see this slightly faded silver-washed fritillary.
I have seen them before at Pembrey, but was very surprised to see one on Ffos Las on Mon 10th and again on Tues, 11th August. I have only once before seen a S-WF on Ffos Las and that was 3.8.2013 when I was able to get a photograph. Unfortunately, this time the butterflies were not so obliging and didn't land, but I did manage to get a good look through the binoculars, so I am confident of the identification. (It is a large butterfly and not a tiny moth!!) On the second day I had 3 sightings, but they were probably of the same individual - the first 2 sightings were approx. 100 yards apart near the start of my walk, and the 3rd was towards the end of the circular walk so approx. 100 yards from the first sighting in the other direction. Can I claim the Ffos Las sightings without photographic proof?

I don`t see why not, Maggie, as long as you`re sure of the i/d.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Ian. I am positive of the i/d so will include it as a single sighting on each day as I'm not sure if the 3 sightings on the Tuesday were of the same individual. It seems highly unlikely that there were suddenly 3 SWTs on Ffos Las at the same time.
ReplyDeleteIn the Llanelli area, I`ve had SW frits occasionally away from their known and regular stronghold within Pembrey Forest, for example in Stradey Woods and nearby Cencoed-uchaf. Those sightings occurred in good summers, when perhaps they wander/disperse?
