A change of (moth) scenery....

Recently I`ve carried out three trapping sessions at my old home (c.1987-95) on the grazing levels near WWT Penclacwydd, Llwynhendy, Llanelli and it was nice to encounter some wetland moths. These included Calamatropha paludella, silky wainscot and bulrush wainscot.

A general view - white willows, ditches and grazing levels...
Above: silky wainscot (with asymmetric wings)
                                                      Above: bulrush wainscot (male).
                                                   Above: Calamotropha paludella.
Above: the inspiration for Boris Johnson`s hair-style?: a small wainscot.

Above: this time back at my present residence and spotted walking along the garden path - an elephant hawk-moth caterpillar...look at those false eyes to scare off a small bird with food on its mind!

Above: nothing to do with moths here, though it turns up in moth traps - the little caddis fly Mystacides azurea - black with a metallic blue sheen. Note the unusual shape to the wings.

Footnote: I`ve just spotted a hummingbird hawk-moth briefly visiting a lavender bush outside my window. I had another one recently but it was gone before I had a chance to get my camera (not that I`d be able to better Adam Dare`s photos!).

  1. I can see the BoJo likeness with the small wainscot - a hair-style I struggle to achieve these days except sideways.
